This year we have a particularly Maya emphasis that takes us to indigenous communities in the mountains of Chiapas and the grand Maya temples of the Yucatan peninsular. We also explore the high, central valleys that have been home to civilisations such as the Aztecs and Zapotecs for thousands of years.
The Maya
We explore the high tropical mountain forests of Chiapas and get close to the Maya people of today. We are very fortunate to work with friends who have an intimate knowledge of the region. This is truly a unique opportunity to see and understand the Maya languages, customs and dress while visiting proud, active communities. The Maya are proud of their heritage and for centuries, from the brutal Spanish conquest to the European influences of today, have kept their traditional rituals. Today’s Maya do not only look to the past. Education is changing their lives. We experience, first-hand, the traditions, challenges and successes of these fascinating, remote communities.
We then travel on to Palenque, Zaachilan, Uxmal and Chichen Itza. The beauty of the ancient temples is breathtaking. Our local guides proudly share their knowledge and passion of their ancient culture.
Maya civilisations are renowned for their art, architecture, language and mathematics. For 15 centuries the Maya flourished. They practised an astronomy so precise that their calendar was as accurate as the one we use today.
Will the world end in 2012 as some interpret the Maya calendar?

As long as the world does not end, our journey includes the mountain city of San Cristobal de las Casas, the fortified port of Campeche and in the heart of the Yucatan peninsular – Merida.
